Wildfires Cause the Spokane Tribe to Declare State of Emergency

SPOKANE INDIAN RESERVATION—The Spokane Tribe of Indians has declared a State of Emergency due to wildfires that have hit the reservation. The ongoing drought combined with high temperatures, low humidity and wind have created extreme wildfire conditions.

Tribal and Wellpinit BIA firefighters have coordinated with Stevens County, Washington State Department of Natural Resources and the Bureau of Indian Affairs, but resources continue to be heavily strained. The Spokane Tribe has also implemented a Reservation closure due to active fire conditions which are threatening forest resources and homes.
