Superintendent's Summary of the Red Lake School District #38 August Board Meeting

The Board met at the Red Lake School District Office on June 17th, for its regular meeting. Superintendent Lundquist shared the following information relative to activities underway to improve achievement, attendance and enrollment:

* The percent of students' proficient on the MCAs in Reading and Math increased by 2.4 and 4.6, respectively. While these gains are modest, it is notable that statewide average scores were flat, for all student groups, including American Indian.

* The District is in the process of entering into an agreement with the Tribe to provide for satellite division of the Red Lake Nation Courts, to hear truancy cases in an effort to improve attendance and ultimately graduation rates.

* The Board also discussed the feasibility of moving payday for non-licensed staff from Wednesdays to Fridays.

Each of the buildings and district departments offered updates on their activities, including the following:

* An opening ceremony is scheduled at the Red Lake Elementary School and Early Childhood Center on September 2, at 2:15. Enrollment is up by about 65 students for a total of 777 students. This number is expected to rise slightly as the year commences.

* The parking lot has been repaired and resurfaced at the Ponemah School and is ready for the start of classes on September 2. Teachers have prepared for the new school over the summer by attending Restorative Measures training to improve student discipline issues, and Reading Academy training with Jan Ferraro to address students' literacy needs.

* The teachers at the Middle School have been working on strengthening the advisory program by creating curriculum based on the Seven Grandfathers Gifts, which will be implemented beginning in November.

* The High School Principal reported a total of 30 graduates, which represents a slight increase over last year. The Principal further explained the logic behind the changing course requirements as the school transitions from a block schedule to a seven period day.

* The Director of Special Services reported an increase in the Pathway II Early Learning Scholarships from $133,500 to over $170,000. These funds will support early childhood education programs for needy preschool students.

* The Food Service Coordinator attended a school nutrition training event sponsored by The Institute of Child Nutrition, where she served as a mentor to others who are seeking to improve their compliance with Federal Guidelines.

* The Business Manger presented information regarding the District's Long-Term Facilities Maintenance Plan, which is required in newly adopted State statute, and allows for the planning and funding of long-term ongoing, building maintenance.

* The Facilities Director attended crisis management training with the Alert Lockdown Inform Counter Evacuate (ALICE) Institute along with several security staff members. The group was very impressed with the training and is considering implementing it in Red Lake Schools after a thorough review of its benefits by the Crisis Management Committee.

In other business the Board approved the 2015-16 School Board Meeting Schedule, which can be found on the Red Lake School District home page at http://www.redlake.k12.mn.us
