LAWSUIT: Tribal flap with sheriff 162 years in making

A dispute between an Indian tribe and the San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department over a recent spate of traffic tickets is rooted in actions taken by the federal government 162 years ago.

The Chemehuevi Indian Tribe, which occupies land in the Mojave Desert along the Colorado River basin, contends in a federal lawsuit that deputies have no jurisdiction anywhere within the reservation boundaries to enforce minor motor vehicle moving violations, as well as licensing and registration violations, against tribal members.
