Red Lake Band of Chippewa Indians Receive $39,171 Grant for "Seeds of Health"

The Economic Development & Planning Department was successful in capturing a $39,171 grant from the First Nations Development Institute of Longmont, Colorado. This grant award will support their efforts with the Red Lake Local Food Initiative (RLLFI).

The food initiative will focus on creating a local foods economy by using existing resources and traditional food knowledge. Efforts will focus on:

1. Community control of food sources by creating local food production;

2. Increased access to healthy foods to decrease diet related health issues; and

3. Assist with the education and promotion of healthy foods for stronger participation.

One of the unique aspects of this food initiative is the construction of a cold-climate greenhouse that will be used to train individuals as future food producers. Economic Development & Planning staff are investigating aquaponics as an option for the greenhouse.

The Red Lake Economic Development & Planning Department is in charge of community and economic planning for the Red Lake Nation. They continue to pursue funding for the various projects they are working on; such as the development of the local community centers, the Language Preservation Initiative, the Constitution Reform Initiative (CRI), the Entrepreneur Program, and the Zoning and Trails Plan,

We send a Chii-Miigwich to the First Nations Development Institute for providing this opportunity for the Red Lake Nation; and please watch for future updates on the progress made under the Red Lake Local Food Initiative at http://www.redlakenation.org
