Tribe sues to stop enforcement of Vehicle Code on tribal reservation

An Indian tribe whose reservation is on sovereign land within San Bernardino County has sued county law enforcement officials, asking a judge to rule that the state Vehicle Code cannot be enforced on tribal reservations and order the sheriff's deputies to cease the practice.

Ukiah-based law firm Rapport and Marston filed the lawsuit in federal court on July 30 on behalf of the Chemehuevi Indian tribe, whose members live in the Mojave Desert along the Colorado River basin.
