Red Lake Man, 20, Arrested After Pursuit That Injured Deputy Sheriff

MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) — A 20-year-old Red Lake man is in jail after leading law enforcement on a pursuit that injured a Beltrami County Deputy Sheriff late Friday afternoon, according to the sheriff’s office.

The sheriff’s office says they assisted Red Lake police and the FBI in a pursuit of a fleeing vehicle traveling south on MN Highway 89 near the Red Lake Casino. The male driver, who was believed to be armed with a firearm and sword, was allegedly involved in an assault involving weapons on the Red Lake Reservation.

After a couple of unsuccessful attempts to stop the vehicle, a deputy successfully ended the pursuit with a PIT maneuver.

As officers approached the suspect vehicle, which was barricaded in, the suspect attempted to flee again by reversing at a high speed. A Beltrami County Deputy Sheriff was struck and injured by the vehicle.

The suspect vehicle struck other law enforcement vehicles before being stopped.

The driver, identified as Nodin Makwa, was then arrested and is being held in the Clearwater County Jail pending a review by the Beltrami County Attorney’s Office for formal criminal charges.

The injured deputy sheriff suffered serious injury and was airlifted to North Memorial Hospital in Robbinsdale where his current condition is reported as stable.

The incident is being investigated.
