The Messenger was able to sit down with the Mille Lacs Band Chief Executive Melanie Benjamin and the Mille Lacs Band Commissioner of Natural Resources and Environment Susan Klapel just hours after the announcement was made that the Mille Lacs Band would not net Mille Lacs walleye next year.
In an effort to be respectful of the resource – Mille Lacs Lake – the Mille Lacs Band of Ojibwe announced Friday, July 31, that they would not harvest walleye by netting next year.
As part of the 1837 treaty, the Mille Lacs Band, the Fond du Lac Band and several Wisconsin Chippewa Bands harvest rights.
