WINNOW IS YOUR AVERAGE GIRL with a not-so-average grandmother, who paints for her a vision spanning lifetimes and beyond, helping her to understand who and what she is, even after being forced to move away from the reservation and a familiar way of life. But like many vibrant things born wild and true, the vision is dulled when the realities of poverty, neglect, and sexual assault become overwhelming and she decides it's safer to seek out her own destruction than to feel helpless and controlled. In the end, the vision returns to her in clear colors, filling up the world, showing her that the way out is an on-going process towards the in.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR

Tashia Hart grew up both off and on the Red Lake Reservation of Chippewa Indians in Northern Minnesota, where her father and other enrolled family members reside.

Like many women, her recovery from traumas like the ones portrayed in "Girl Unreserved" is a life-long, on-going process.

She is currently finding ways to bring healthy feminine and masculine energy into her life.
