Over 5,000 Take to the Streets for Tar Sands Resistance March

St. Paul – According to estimates taken on the ground, more than 5,000 people took to the streets for the Tar Sands Resistance March, making this the largest demonstration against tar sands extraction in the history of the Midwest.

Activists bused in from across the Midwest to march and rally as part of a growing region-wide movement to block dangerous tar sands expansion projects that threaten land, water, and health. Marchers called on the Obama Administration to reject dirty fuels like tar sands and take action on climate.

The thousands of activists in attendance represented diverse organizations and communities from across the Midwest including environmental and social justice activists, faith groups, Indigenous people, and frontline communities. They were joined by prominent figures in the national environmental movement including indigenous activist Winona LaDuke, Sierra Club President Aaron Mair, 350.org co-founder Bill McKibben, and U.S. Congressman Keith Ellison.
