Thousands to Gather for Tar Sands Resistance March on June 6

St. Paul, MN -- Organized by many of the same people who staged last year's People's Climate March that drew over 400,000 people to the streets of Manhattan, the Tar Sands Resistance March is coming to the Twin Cities on June 6.

Hundreds of local, regional, and national organizations are coming together to send a clear message to the Obama Administration: keep toxic tar sands out of our communities, fight for clean water, clean energy, and a stable climate.

With thousands of people expected to attend, the event will be the largest anti-tar sands event ever to take place in the region. The event will call attention to the critical fight not just against Keystone XL but against all dirty tar sands infrastructure, which currently poses a serious threat to the Great Lakes, our rivers, our communities, and our climate.

“The movement promoting clean energy prosperity in place of polluting fossil fuels is growing and being heard in every corner of the country,” said Terry Houle, Co-Chair of the Sierra Club's Northstar Chapter Tar Sands Team. “The Tar Sands Resistance March in the Twin Cities picks up where last year's Peoples' Climate March in New York left off -- people from all walks of life are calling on the Administration to keep dirty fuels in the ground for the sake of clean air, clean water, and a stable climate.”

“One quarter of existing tar sands imports are refined in Minnesota by the Koch Brothers,” said Victor Menotti, Executive Director of the International Forum on Globalization, “and their proposed expansion of other fossil fuels infrastructure across the Headwaters of the Mississippi River, such as their Clearbrook Terminal that connects to Enbridge's Alberta Clipper, are all essential to exploiting Koch's record carbon reserves in Canada.”

“The Obama administration shouldn’t be allowing more dirty tar sands oil into Minnesota and the Great Lakes region,” added Marc Fink, attorney with the Center for Biological Diversity. “It’s long past time for the president to put the need for clean water and a livable planet above the demands of multinational oil companies.”
