American Indian Center hosts Annual Powwow

Saint Cloud, MN – American Indian Center, Saint Cloud State University is hosting its 22nd Annual Spring Powwow at the gymnasium of Halenbeck Hall on Saturday, April 11, 2015. The grand entry will begin at 1 pm and 7 pm with a meal served at 5pm. There will also be a hand drum competition. The event is free and open to public.

The powwow will be attended by American Indian dancers and native drum groups from reservations and communities across the Midwest area. The Host Drum will be Battle River (Red Lake); MC: Keveon Kingbird (Red Lake); Arena Director: Kevin Kingbird (Red Lake) and Spiritual Leader: Murphy Thomas (Red Lake). The SCSU annual powwow gives everyone an opportunity to experience a rich culture with traditional drum music and dance. The traditional powwow includes many symbolic dances which represent native life and experiences, but the emphasis is more on fellowship, feasting and honoring ceremonies. It is a traditional celebration of life for American Indians and time for families to gather and renew friendships, sing, dance and spiritually bond. The powwow renews the cultural and spiritual traditions for young and old alike.
