Red Lake rolls by Laporte, Walker routs Blackduck in Section 8A openers

BEMIDJI - Grace White had 15 points to help Red Lake cruise past Laporte 65-27 in their Sub-Section 8A East quarterfinal game Thursday at the BSU Gymnasium.

The Warriors jumped out to a 24-4 lead after the first ten minutes of play.

White had 12 points while Sam Roy added nine in the first half to contribute 21 of Red Lake's 40 points compared to Laporte's 10 after the first 18 minutes.

Kalei Kerby sunk four from inside and went 6-for-12 from the free-throw line to lead the Wildcats with 14 points. Deloris Bedeau drained two three-pointers.

Laporte (4-23) improved in the second frame, only losing it by eight points, 25-18.

Danielle Seki led the Warriors' second half effort with nine points.

A late six-point run gave the young Wildcat team some life, but Red Lake (24-2) kept a big lead throughout and won the game handily.

"I think our team at the end of the year could beat our team at the beginning of the year by about 20," Laporte coach Carl Dugstad said. "So we did improve, but it was a long year.

"At one point during that game we had a senior, an eighth grader, two ninth graders and a sophomore out there, so we're young."

The Warriors advance to the semifinals to play Walker-Hackensack-Akeley at noon Saturday at Ralph Engelstad Arena in Thief River Falls.

"We just try to focus on one game at a time," Red Lake coach Randy Holthusen said. "That's all we can do right now."
