Wind chill advisory for Bemidji, area

BEMIDJI -- The National Weather Service office in Grand Forks says the Bemidji area will be in an overnight wind chill advisory through 1 p.m. Tuesday, with wind chills of 30 below expected.

The weather service office in Grand Forks issued the warning starting at 10 p.m. Monday for much of northwest Minnesota and northeast North Dakota.

Monday’s overnight forecast into Tuesday calls for the temperature to drop to as low as 12 below zero, with winds of 10 to 15 miles per hour, which may push wind chill values as low as 30 below.

A wind chill advisory is issued when very cold air and winds combine to generate dangerous conditions, which could result in frostbite if precautions are not taken, the weather service said.

It will “warm” up a bit during the day Tuesday, with a high of 2 degrees, but there’s a 50 percent chance of snow, mainly in the afternoon. Wind chills are expected to remain near 30 below, and then drop down even lower at night, possibly to 40 below, the weather service said.

It will remain cold through rest of the week, although Friday is expected to be about 16 degrees, and Saturday and Sunday will remain above freezing in the daytime. Monday should feel practically balmy, with a high temperature of 20 degrees forecast.
