Two Red Lake men sentenced in violent crime cases

RED LAKE -- Two Red Lake were sentenced Wednesday in federal court in Duluth to seven years in prison for unrelated offenses that occurred last year on the Red Lake Indian Reservation.

Fernando Luis May-Gil-Garcia, 29, was convicted of assault resulting in serious bodily injury. May-Gil-Garcia plead guilty to assaulting a woman multiple times in August 2013 while she was holding a baby and unable to fend off the blows, according to a release from the U.S. Attorney’s Office. The release said the baby was struck during the assault.

As a result of the attack, May-Gil-Garcia’s victim suffered multiple broken bones in her face. May-Gil-Garcia also bit the victim’s face and back, according to court documents.

Avery Wade Schoenborn, 25, was convicted of sexual abuse from an incident that occurred in May 2013. Schoenborn sexually assaulted a female victim while she was unconscious in a friend’s home, the release said. The victim was taken to a hospital where she regained consciousness and was treated and released. Schoenborn’s jury trial lasted two days in the U.S. District Court in Duluth, the release said. The jury deliberated for less than two hours before returning a guilty verdict.

Both cases resulted from investigations conducted by the Federal Bureau of Investigation and the Red Lake Police Department.
