Labor Coalition Warns Ridgedale Center Retail Tenants of Construction Hazards

Unions Prepare to Launch Mobile “Shop At Your Own Risk” Ad Campaign at Press Event Wednesday

Minnetonka, MN (October 20, 2014) – More than two dozen local unions are alerting Ridgedale Center retail tenants as they prepare to launch a campaign this Wednesday at 10:30 a.m. outside the Ridgedale Library warning shoppers of serious safety hazards at the mall.

The Minneapolis Building and Construction Trades Council distributed letters today to businesses at the mall, informing them of the upcoming campaign and educating them about the history of safety problems with the mall’s $100 million renovation project. The coalition of 28 unions has documented numerous safety issues since the project began last year. Despite warning General Growth Properties, the mall’s Chicago-based owner, of hazards ranging from unlocked electrical boxes to unsecured demolition sites, new dangers continued to arise.

The labor coalition is set to begin an innovative and ambitious mobile media ad campaign to warn shoppers, after GGP called in police to stop union members from educating shoppers in person in July. The ads will target the wireless and mobile devices of Ridgedale Center customers with the campaign’s “Shop at Your Own Risk” safety message. The ad campaign will be accompanied by the launch of a website (ShopAtYourOwnRisk.org) and Facebook page (facebook.com/ShopAtYourOwnRisk).
