Red Lake Police bust Illinois man with heroin on reservation

RED LAKE -- Red Lake Tribal Police arrested a man from Illinois on Tuesday for possession of heroin on the Red Lake Indian Reservation.

David Contrell McClure, 22, of Naperville, Ill., had 40 grams of heroin in his possession when officers executed a search warrant at a Little Rock residence Tuesday morning. Officers were searching for narcotics and narcotic trafficking, according to a criminal complaint.

Red Lake officers located McClure in a bedroom attempting to hide several micro-baggies containing a large amount of heroin. McClure is not a band member of the Red Lake Nation.

Another non-band member, Mark Anthony White, 23, address unknown, was also arrested. McClure and White were detained until Beltrami County Sheriff's Deputies arrived at the Little Rock residence.

Deputies took McClure into custody based on the possession of heroin and drug trafficking occurring at the residence. Since White had an outstanding felony warrant from Illinois, he was also taken into custody. Both men were transported to the Beltrami County Law Enforcement Center.

"McClure thereafter provided a Mirandized statement wherein he admitted to transporting 50 grams of heroin through Beltrami County onto the Red Lake Reservation for purposes of selling it to band members," court documents said.

McClure told law enforcement he obtained the heroin in Chicago and contacted band members in Minneapolis, who expressed interest in distributing the heroin on the reservation. McClure was given a ride from Minneapolis to Red Lake, court documents said.

McClure said White had been with him but White was not involved in the possession or trafficking and did not assist in the illegal activity in any way, according to court documents.

White was booked into the Beltrami County Jail on charges of fugitive from justice from another state, first-degree drug possession and first-degree drug sale. The Beltrami County Attorney's Office reported White was not charged.

McClure is charged with first-degree possession of heroin with intent to distribute, which carries a maximum penalty of 30 years in prison and a $1 million fine. McClure is being held in the Beltrami County Jail on a $100,000 conditional bond. His next court appearance is scheduled for Monday.
