Heroin and meth seized in Red Lake drug bust

RED LAKE -- Two men were arrested Friday in Red Lake and are charged with possession of heroin and methamphetamine in Beltrami County.

Christopher Erving Peoples, 33, of Red Lake, and Michael Linor Dukes, 46, address unknown, are charged with felony drug possession. Peoples and Dukes appeared Monday in Beltrami County District Court.

Officers with the Headwaters Safe Trails Task Force and Beltrami County Sheriff's Office assisted the Red Lake Police Department in executing a search warrant Friday at a residence on the 23300 block of Highway 1 in Red Lake. A search of the residence disclosed numerous controlled substances, according to court documents.

Peoples was located in a basement bedroom of the residence, where officers found a digital scale, a micro bag of a brown substance believed to be heroin and numerous drug paraphernalia items. In the common area of the home, a pot on the kitchen stove was found to contain a black tube that contained a brown powdery substance that field tested positive for heroin, according to a criminal complaint. A scale was also located in the kitchen.

Peoples reportedly told law enforcement he was a user of controlled substances and earlier in the day he had used methamphetamine and heroin, according to court documents.

Dukes was found to be in possession of a bag of methamphetamine in his pants pocket.

A fifth-degree possession of heroin or methamphetamine charge carries a maximum penalty of five years in prison and a $10,000 fine. Peoples and Dukes are scheduled to appear Monday in Beltrami County District Court.
