Chickasaw Cultural Center Plans Grandparents Day Celebration Sept. 6-7

National Grandparents Day is Sunday, Sept. 7, and the Chickasaw Cultural Center, Sulphur, has planned a special celebration the weekend of Sept. 6 - 7 to honor grandparents.

Established in 1978 by proclamation from former President Jimmy Carter, Grandparents Day is a day set aside in homage of grandparents. The Chickasaw Cultural Center has several activities planned to celebrate grandparents and offer grandparents and grandchildren a place to make lasting memories.

During the Grandparents Celebration, grandparents will receive free admission to the Chikasha Poya Exhibit Hall, as well as a 10 percent discount in the Aaimpa' Café, which offers an array of traditional Native American fare and modern favorites.

Several activities for grandparents and grandchildren are planned, including: Stomp Dance and cultural demonstrations, Storytelling and several interactive activities in the traditional living village, including archery, basket making and Stickball.

Grandparents will also receive a 10 percent discount in the cultural center gift shops (excluding consignment items) during the celebration.

In addition, the family-friendly movie “Frozen” will be screened at 6:30 p.m. in the large-format Anoli' Theatre. A part of the Saturday night movie line up, tickets for “Frozen” are $3 for Adults and $2 for Children 12 and under. A $5 combination package including movie ticket, popcorn and a bottled drink is also available.

The Chickasaw Cultural Center, 867 Charles Cooper Memorial Drive in Sulphur, Okla., is open Monday-Saturday 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Sunday noon to 5 p.m. The center will be closed Monday, Sept. 1, in observance of Labor Day.
