Redby man pleads guilty to Bemidji stabbing

BEMIDJI -- A Redby man plead guilty in Beltrami County Court to charges in a Bemidji stabbing incident in May.

Orland James Spears, 23, is charged with felony first-degree burglary in possession of a dangerous weapon and second degree assault. He entered a guilty plea June 20.

Spears is accused of stabbing a 71-year-old man at his home when Spears asked to use his telephone. The man was stabbed twice in the chest before Spears fled on foot and was later apprehended by the Beltrami County Sheriff's Office K-9.

Spears faces up to 20 years in prison and a $35,000 fine on the burglary charge and up to seven years in prison and a $14,000 fine for the assault charge. He is scheduled for sentencing on Aug. 1. Spears is currently incarcerated at the Beltrami County Jail.
