Area High School Roundup: Kelliher-Northome, Blackduck softball teams battle to final out in doubleheader

KELLIHER -- Neighborhood rivals Kelliher-Northome and Blackduck battled to the bitter end in both games of a doubleheader last week and the result was a split. The Mustangs rallied with two runs in the bottom of the seventh to claim the opener 7-6 but Blackduck returned the favor in the nightcap, plating a pair in the game's last at-bat to take the rematch 17-16.

"It was a great night of games, even though it rained for all of the second game," said K-N coach Matt Hanson.

Following that split Kelliher-Northome won three of its next four games. The Mustangs thumped Red Lake County Central 10-5 and Indus 12-6 and edged Laporte 12-11. On Tuesday they fell 13-3 to Pine River.

On Wednesday K-N (8-4) was scheduled to face Cass Lake-Bena in a make-up contest.

Blackduck is 10-4-1 after tying Laporte 5-5 in eight innings and tripping Walker-Hackensack-Akeley 9-5.

Bagley dipped to 3-13 after dropping four of six games in the past week. After sweeping Lake Park-Audubon 6-3 and 15-5 the Flyers fell 29-4 to Park Rapids, 3-2 to Carlton, 18-3 to Deer River and 9-2 to Hill City.

They are scheduled to end their season Friday against East Polk.

Cass Lake-Bena stopped Red Lake 12-10 on Monday but lost 25-2 to WHA and 14-13 to Remer on Tuesday. The Panthers ended their regular season Wednesday at Kelliher-Northome.

Red Lake is 0-7 and ends its regular season today against Laporte. The Wildcats will conclude their campaign Saturday at Lake of the Woods.

Section seeding

The Section 8A coaches will learn their playoff seeding positions later this week and, based on the current QRF ratings, Badger-Greenbush-Middle River should earn the top spot in the North Sub-Section and Norman County East should rule the roost in the South.

BGMR has a QRF of 59.1 and Red Lake Falls is a distant second with 38.1 Completing the current QRF standings in the North Sub-Section are Blackduck (32.5), Lake of the Woods (31.9), Kelliher-Northome (31.5), RLCC (23.1), Red Lake (10.9) and Indus (8.5).

The South Sub-Section QRF standings as of Wednesday saw NCE on top with 51.3. Norman County was second (39.5) and was followed by Sacred Heart (35.7), Fertile-Beltrami (28.2), Laporte (22.2), Bagley (19.7) and Cass Lake-Bena (13.5).

"Seeding for Section 8 is set to happen after Thursday's games, unless that changes due to the weather," Hanson said. "I'm pushing for the section to wait until after Friday's games for seeding. But we'll have to see."

WHA leads baseball seeding

Walker-Hackensack-Akeley enters the stretch run as the top team in the Section 8A East QRF ratings as the Wolves own a 34.1 mark. Bagley is second (29.7) and trailing the Flyers are Northland-Remer (26.0), Blackduck (21.4), Laporte (16.6), Lake of the Woods (15.5), Cass Lake-Bena (14.2), Northome-Kelliher (14.1) and Red Lake (9.7).

Red Lake County owns the top spot in 8A West with a QRF of 43.3.

After falling 2-0 to Lake Park-Audubon last week, Bagley takes a 6-4 record into today's home games against Cass Lake-Bena and Blackduck. On Monday the Flyers will visit Roseau.

Two-time defending Section 8A champion Blackduck is 8-5 after last week's 16-8 win at Northome-Kelliher. Today the Drakes will face Bagley and on Tuesday they will host WHA.

Laporte was 2-6 prior to Wednesday's home doubleheader with Pine River. On Friday the Wildcats will visit WHA and on Saturday they will entertain Lake of the Woods in a twinbill.

Cass Lake-Bena has been hampered by the weather and the Panthers were 1-6 prior to Wednesday's doubleheader against Northome-Kelliher (2-9). The Mustangs will also be in action Friday at Littlefork.

Red Lake will continue its search for its initial victory today when it visits Lake of the Woods for two games. The Warriors are 0-6 and, similar to Cass Lake-Bena, has lost games to the weather.
