Two killed in Cass County head-on collision

BEMIDJI -- Two people from Cass Lake were killed in a head-on collision Saturday night in Cass County.

According to the Minnesota State Patrol incident report, a 2004 Kia Spectra was southbound on County Road 75 and Leech Lake Route 438 before 11 p.m. on Saturday when it was struck by 1999 Chevy Tahoe, which was traveling north on the road. The Tahoe had swerved into the southbound lane lane, forcing another vehicle off the road, before it hit the Kia, the patrol said.

The Kia's driver, Lisa Collins, 47, and passenger, Timothy Collins, 46, both of Cass Lake, were killed in the accident, the patrol said. The driver of the Tahoe, Michael Spangel, 27, of Cass Lake, and his passenger, Stacy Stangel, 47, Longville, Minn., both suffered serious injuries and were transported to Essentia Health in Fargo, according to the incident report.

The Patrol said all four people involved in the accident were not wearing seat belts. The accident remains under investigation.
