Powwow for Hope: Third annual fundraiser to fight cancer among American Indians

Event will honor cancer survivors, warriors and caregivers, raise awareness of cancer risks and increase resources to ease the burdens of cancer

Minneapolis, MN (April 25, 2014) Cancer deeply touches thousands of families and friends every year. The American Indian Cancer Foundation (AICAF) will host the third annual Powwow for Hope on May 3rd, 2014, to be held at Base Camp facility at Fort Snelling. The Powwow is a celebratory way to help fight one of the most debilitating diseases Minnesota American Indian families encounter. Cancer is the leading cause of death for American Indians across the Northern Plains, including Minnesota.

Powwow for Hope – Dancing for life, love and hope, is an annual fundraiser for the American Indian Cancer Foundation, whose mission is to reduce cancer and its impact on American Indian families through education, improved access to prevention, early detection, treatment and survivor support. Funds raised at the event will support the work of AICAF. Kris Rhodes, AICAF Executive Director says, “Help is needed to address the cancer burdens faced by many American Indian families. All money raised by Powwow for Hope will be used to support cancer education and supportive services for American Indian families.”

Many want to know how AICAF is combining fundraising with a powwow:

 Over two dozen teams have already begun fundraising efforts. Teams compete to see who can raise the most funds prior to and during the event. Last year, teams alone raised over $21,000!

 Sponsors are an important factor in supporting this work. The event would not be possible without sponsors and AICAF continually seeks new sponsorships.

 A silent auction will be held at the event. Last year, over $3,800 was raised.

 Drum groups, dancers, emcees, arena directors, and hundreds of volunteers from all over join this effort without pay to show their support of AICAF’s mission. None of this would be possible without these individuals who dedicate their talents, time, effort and voices to support the Powwow for Hope each year!

 Donate Now! at or in-person at the Powwow!

If you would like more information about Sponsorship, Teams, Silent Auction Donations or Volunteering, please contact AICAF at 612.314.4848 or No vendor tables will be available. Since all proceeds will go to AICAF, vendor tables are restricted to teams for fundraising.
