White Earth man sentenced for assault and firearm violation

WHITE EARTH -- A White Earth man was sentenced in federal court Thursday for assaulting a woman with a short-barreled shotgun in June.

Michael James Deegan, 24, was sentenced to concurrent prison terms of 92 months and 60 months in federal prison for possession of an unregistered firearm and assault resulting in substantial bodily injury on a White Earth woman.

Deegan admitted to punching the woman in the head and body on the White Earth Indian Reservation, according to a release issued by the U.S. Attorney’s Office. The attorney’s office reported this was the first case accepted from White Earth under an assumption of concurrent jurisdiction that commenced on June 1, 2013. The case was investigated by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives, the Federal Bureau of Investigation, White Earth Tribal Police Department and the Mahnomen County Sheriff’’s Office.
