Leaders of 9 More Ethnic/Minority/Nationality House Caucuses Now Back American People Museum; Total is 33

Leaders of nine ethnic, nationality and minority House caucuses have become cosponsors in recent weeks of a [1]resolution backing the proposed National Museum of the American People.

The new sponsors include Reps. Eliot Engel, D-NY, who leads Irish, Latino-Jewish, Albanian and Israel Allies caucuses; Yvette Clark, D-NY, Vice Chair of the Congressional Black Caucus; Pedro Pierluisi, D-PR, of the Friends of Spain caucus, and Sheila Jackson Lee, D-TX, a leader of the Pakistan, Afghan and Algerian caucuses. With these additions, leaders of 33 different ethnic caucuses support this project.

“The museum, about the making of the American People, will tell the immigration and migration stories of every ethnic, nationality and minority group in the nation from the prehistoric period through today,” said Sam Eskenazi, director of the Coalition for the National Museum of the American People. The coalition is composed of more than 150 ethnic and minority organizations representing the full spectrum of Americans.

“This is one of the most amazing stories in human history about people from every part of our globe creating this nation. Our coalition vows to make this the best story-telling museum in the world,” Eskenazi said.

The coalition is simply seeking a bipartisan commission to study establishment of the museum. No federal funding is being sought to plan, build or operate the museum.

Among the other bipartisan House caucuses whose leaders are cosponsors of the museum’s resolution include those for Scots, Native Americans, Italians, Blacks, Polish, Germans, Greeks, Czechs, Vietnamese, English, Turks, Norwegians, Portuguese, Koreans, Taiwanese and several Arabic nationalities as well as the bipartisan leaders of the History and the Humanities caucuses.
