Clearbrook-Gonvick upsets Red Lake 70-66

THIEF RIVER FALLS - Some clutch foul shooting late in the game allowed Clearbrook-Gonvick to upset top-seeded Red Lake 70-66 in their Sub-Section 8A East title game Tuesday at Ralph Engelstad Arena in Thief River Falls.

The Bears (17-11) needed a late 12-1 run to top the Warriors (17-4), who led 39-37 at halftime and held a 67-58 lead late in the game.

However, Clearbrook went on a 12-1 run to end the game, powered in part by clutch foul shooting from Madison Stenzel and Liz Bodensteiner.

Stenzel made nine of the 10 free throws she attempted in the second half and scored 21 points while Bodensteiner scored a team-high 27 points and made two free throws near the end of the game to help Clearbrook's cause.

Red Lake was led by Averi Holthusen, who scored a game-high 31 points and was the only Warriors player in double figures.

Clearbrook will take on west No. 1 seed Win-E-Mac at 7 p.;m. Friday for the Section 8A title.

The Patriots defeated Red Lake Falls 65-31 in the Sub-Section 8A East finals earlier Tuesday.
