Red Lake, Walker-Hackensack-Akley narrowly advance to sub-section title game - P11

Northome-Kelliher came out to play on Saturday, March 1, 2014 at the Ralph Eneglestad Arena in Thief River Falls. They drew first blood and made Red Lake play catch-up ball most of the evening. At the halfway mark, the Mustangs led the Warriors 34-29.

With 8:27 left in the game the Warriors finally tied the score, but couldn't take the lead. They tied it again at 5:09, and it wasn't until with just 1:58 left, Red Lake took their first lead of the game, 68-67. After a turnover forced by the Warriors' full-court press, it was a lead they never gave back, winning in regulation 78-70.

Ryan Holthusen scored 40 points in the game, hitting his first 2-points with 8:07 remaining in the first half. He came on much stronger in the second half and made some hard drives to the basket. Many of his shots also came from the free throw line.

Trevenn Beaulieu added 15 on the night, followed by Jeremy Martin with 10 and Jimmy Jourdain with 6.

Mark Geerdes led Northome-Kelliher with 18 points as the Mustangs ended their season at 16-11. Isaiah Rahier added 14 points for Northome-Kelliher and Brenin Head came off the bench to hit 11.

It was the third time this season that the Warriors defeated the Mustangs.

The Warriors improved their overall record to 21-7 and it earned them berth in Tuesday's East Sub-Section 8A Championship game against Walker-Hackensack-Akeley.

Earlier, WHA escaped Fosston 74-68 in overtime to give them a berth in Tuesday's game.

Saturday's results sets up Tuesday's sub-section championship game against the top two seeds. WHA, the defending Section 8A champion and No. 1 seed, will take a 23-4 record into Tuesday's contest with second-ranked Red Lake.

In Saturday's West Sub-Section semifinals, top-ranked Northern Freeze edged Kittson County 49-44 and No. 3 Warren-Alvarado-Oslo upset second-rated Fertile-Beltrami 64-60.

Tuesday's first game at the REA will pit Northern Freeze against WAO at 6 p.m. Walker-Hackensack-Akeley and Red Lake will meet in the 7:45 p.m. contest.

Tuesday's winners will return to the REA on Friday in the section championship game. That battle is scheduled for 7 p.m.

Walker-Hackensack-Akley narrowly escaped losing to the Fosston Greyhounds on Saturday. It was a game that featured the two teams that have represented Section 8A in the last three State Boys Basketball Tournaments.

Jesse Sather, a ninth grader with very little varsity experience, hit a three pointer with just over three seconds left in regulation to send the game into overtime at 63-63.

The Wolves' two top scorers fouled out in regulation, but Fosston was unable to use that to their advange.

The Greyhounds and Wolves met in the first round of the Sub-Section opening round two years ago with Fosston winning that game in two overtimes.

Walker-Hackensack-Akeley improved their record to 23-4, with Fosston ending their season at 18-7. The Wolves will now play Red Lake on Tuesday for the East Sub-Section 8A Championship in Thief River Fallsl

Red Lake is the last team to beat Walker-Hackensack-Akeley back on January 21st 66-54 as the two teams split their two regular season games.
