LABORERS DISTRICT COUNCIL OFFERS A WARM WELCOME TO PRESIDENT OBAMA AT HIS FEB. 26 VISIT TO ST. PAUL

Obama’s support of 2010 TIGER Grant helped put Minnesotans to work on renovated Union Depot, the state’s newest transportation hub

ST PAUL, MN (February 25, 2014 ) - The President of the Laborers District Council of MN & ND (LDC), representing nearly 12,000 skilled construction craft Laborers Union members in MN & ND, offered the following statement in advance of President Barack Obama’s visit to the historic St. Paul Union Depot facility in Minnesota on Wed. Feb. 26.

“The members of the Laborers District Council wish to welcome President Obama to Minnesota with a spirit of gratitude and support,” said Pufahl. “It was the President’s unwavering support of the TIGER Grant in 2010 that helped to get the historic depot renovated and in the process put more than 1,200 union members to work.”

Representing over 12,000 workers, many of whom work to build and repair Minnesota's transportation infrastructure, the LDC is an advocate for improving the state’s transportation system’s shortcomings.

The Transportation Investment Generating Economic Recovery (TIGER) Grant provided $35 million to renovate the Union Depot and once again make it a bustling transportation hub that provides access to commuter rail, light rail and busing to commuters and travelers from across the Upper Midwest.

In addition to the President’s visit, Pufahl says the LDC is focused on working hard to garner the support of the legislature as it considers a transportation bill in its new session which started today, Feb. 25. “These are exciting times. We are primed to work with the legislature to get their support so that even more union workers can find steady employment that makes the most of their skills and helps to better the transportation infrastructure of this great state,” said Pufahl. “President Obama’s visit is a great kickoff to a crucial time for the workers of this state who depend on projects that not only provide employment, but make a positive impact on our society.”
