Area high schools: It should be a memorable week for Blackduck's Trey Volk

BLACKDUCK - It will be a memorable week for Blackduck's Trey Volk .

On Wednesday the Blackduck High School senior officially signed a Letter of Intent to attend and play football at BSU. And on Friday Volk could add an exclamation point to a great basketball career by scoring his 2,000th point as a Drake.

Blackduck hosts Cass Lake-Bena on Friday and Volk will begin the game with 1,985 career points.

Earlier this winter Volk verbally committed to the BSU football program but on Wednesday he put his name on the dotted line.

"Trey had a very successful high school career for the Blackduck Drakes and is very excited to become a member of Beaver Nation and the Bemidji State University football team," said his Blackduck football coach Jeff Volk.

During his high school career Volk rushed for more than 2,500 yards, had more than 500 receiving yards and 500 return yards, and scored 42 touchdowns.

Defensively he led the team in interceptions during two seasons and compiled almost 200 tackles.

Volk was named to the all conference team three times, was the North Star Conference Offensive Player of the Year one season and was also named to the Minnesota Associated Press honorable mention All-State team.

Every victory the Drakes can muster on the basketball court this winter will be valuable as the Drakes currently are in sixth place in the Section 8A East QRF ratings. Leading the 11-team field is Red Lake with a 13-7 overall record and a QRF of 81.0. Holding second with a QRF of 73.0 is Fosston (14-3) while Walker-Hackensack-Akeley (14-4) is third in QRF with 71.7 and Cass Lake-Bena (12-4) is fourth with a QRF of 69.4.

Northome-Kelliher (11-5) currently is fifth in the Section 8A QRF race at 58.9 but Blackduck is right on the Mustangs' heels with a 56.8 QRF.

Trailing the leaders are Mahnomen (48.7), Laporte (27.8), Clearbrook-Gonvick (25.7), Lake of the Woods (16.1) and Bug O Nay Ge Shig (12.8).

The QRF will help the Section 8A East officials seed the teams for the playoffs.

In the Northland Conference chase WHA rules the roost with an 8-1 record but CL-B and Red Lake are in hot pursuit. The Panthers own an 8-2 league record and Red Lake is 7-2. Blackduck is fourth at 6-5 while Nevis is 5-5, Northome-Kelliher 4-5, Pine River 1-9 and Laporte 0-10.

Today's schedule finds Northome-Kelliher visiting LOW and Laporte traveling to Red Lake. On Friday CL-B will head to Blackduck and Northome-Kelliher will invade Pine River.

In Friday's nonconference action Clearbrook-Gonvick will host Sacred Heart and Laporte will entertain Bug O Nay Ge Shig.

In a Pine to Prairie contest, Lake Park-Audubon will visit Bagley. The Flyers are fifth in the North Division with an overall record of 5-15 and a league mark of 3-8. Lake Park-Audubon is fourth in the South Division with a 7-9 overall record and a 4-7 conference record.

Bagley sits seventh in the nine-team Section 8-2A Northeast standings with a 35.4 QRF. East Grand Forks owns first at 125.7 and Crosby-Ironton is second at 119.9.

Girls Basketball

Bagley's girls team is 11-7 overall and holds second place in the Pine to Prairie North Division at 9-4. Win-E-Mac is the king of the hill with a 15-1 overall record and a 12-0 league mark.

In the Section 8-2A rankings, Bagley is eighth among the nine teams with a 48.7 QRF. Pequot Lakes is first at 93.3 and East Grand Forks is second at 85.1.

Walker-Hackensack-Akeley and Red Lake appear to be the cream of the crop in Section 8A East as the Wolves (14-3) boast a 61.8 QRF and the Warriors (11-2) own a 59.8 QRF.

Clearbrook-Gonvick (9-7) currently is a distant third at 44.0. Not far behind the Bears are Kelliher Northome (8-8, 38.99 QRF) and Fosston (8-8, 38.6 QRF).

Trailing the field are Blackduck (5-12, 23.4), Lake of the Woods (2-13, 19.5), Mahnomen (2-14, 19.0), Cass Lake-Bena (0-14, 15.9) and Laporte (0-13, 14.2).

Today's schedule sees Red Lake hosting Laporte, Cass Lake-Bena visiting Clearbrook-Gonvick and Blackduck entertaining Deer River.

On Friday CL-B will visit Blackduck and Kelliher-Northome will make the long trip to Pine River.
