Gavin Jourdain wins Spelling Bee at Red Lake Middle School

Along with the cold, wintery weather comes spelling bee time. The Red Lake School District Spelling Bee was held on January 23 at the middle school. In order to be eligible for the district competition, each speller had to participate and win classroom or grade level completions. Spellers from Red Lake Elementary, Ponemah, and Red Lake Middle School participated in the district bee, which includes spellers from grades 5-8.

Spellers who competed this year were Victoria Seki, Erin Lussier, Alexander Gonzolas, KayLynn Chaboyea, Sade Melina, Cheyenne Waybenais, Jasson Barret-Rushman, Nazharay White, Kyler Patterson, Jamie Auginash, Drew May-Johnson, Patrick Defoe, Bobby Jo Head, Gavin Jourdain, and Quinten Chaboyea.

After several exciting rounds, KayLynn Chaboyea was determined to be the runner-up, and Gavin Jourdain the 1st place winner. Both of them received a trophy, and a one year online subscription to Encyclopedia Britannica Kids. They also are both eligible to compete in the regional spelling bee, which will be held in Thief River Falls on Wednesday, February 12, 2014.
