Lac Vieux Student Named Player of the Week

The Great South Athletic Conference has announced the women's basketball Player of the Week for games played January 6 - 13 and, following voting by the league's sports information directors, Marissa Burke of Finlandia claimed the weekly honor.

Marissa added two more double-doubles to her resume this past week (6 double-doubles in her last seven games) as she helped lead the Lions to a 2-0 record with a 98-56 win over Northland College and a 90-43 win over Mount Mary University. In the game against Northland College, Burke had 38 points (12-of-26 FG of which 5-of-10 from 3-pt and 9-of-10 from the line), 12 rebounds, 7 assists, 7 blocks, and 1 steal in 36 minutes of play. In the game against Mt. Mary University, Burke had 32 points (12-of-21 FG of which 3-of-7 from 3-pt and 5-of-5 from the line), 11 rebounds, 5 blocks, 3 steals, and 1 assist in 30 minutes of play. Her totals for the two games include 70 points (30 points per game), while shooting 51% from the floor, 47% from the arc, and 93% from the FT line with 23 rebounds (11.5 a game), 12 blocks (6 per game), 8 assists (4 per game), and 4 (2 per game) steals.

Marissa is the daughter of proud parents Richard Burke and Giizhigookway (formerly Michelle Hazen). Marissa is a enrolled tribal member of the Lac Vieux Desert band of Lake Superior Chippewa.

The GSAC sports information directors nominate Player of the Week candidates and then vote on the top two nominees in each sport as selected by the conference office. Player of the Week voting occurs on Tuesdays and the weekly announcement of the winners is released each Wednesday morning.
