Boys basketbal: Hendricks scores 34 but BHS falls

BEMIDJI - The Bemidji boys basketball team stuck with Red Lake most of the way Saturday but an 11-1 streak by the Warriors midway through the second half gave the visitors a double-digit lead and Red Lake went on to down the Jacks 86-72 at the BHS gym.

The first half was a give-and-take battle as it featured six ties. The Lumberjacks briefly led 10-7 following a Gabe Salander bucket from the paint but Red Lake answered with a 6-0 run to regain the lead at 13-10.

With 9:13 to play in the half the score was knotted at 15-15 but the Warriors took control with a 10-3 flurry that gave them a 25-18 advantage.

BHS scored the final five points of the half as James Hendricks found room on a drive and Joe Strong drained a 3-pointer. Those points enabled the Jacks to whittle their deficit to only 40-34 at the break.

Hendricks and Strong scored all but five of Bemidji's first-half points. Hendricks connected on a trio of 3-pointers in the stanza and scored 19 points by intermission while Strong had 11.

Ryan Holthusen scored 16 first-half points to lead Red Lake.

The Warriors began the second half with a 7-0 run and opened a 47-34 lead. Strong's 3-pointer with 13 minutes to play brought Bemidji within single digits at 54-46 and eventually the Jacks closed the gap to 64-60 after a Hendricks 3-pointer.

Once again, however, Red Lake had the answer and an 11-1 spurt gave the Warriors a 75-61 cushion.

Hendricks led all scorers with 34 points. The junior also snared 11 rebounds, dished four assists and had three steals.

Strong added 17 points and Collin Rutledge had eight.

Holthusen paced Red Lake (8-6) with 32 points. Jeremy Martin added 13, Mason Kingbird 12 and James Jourdain 10.
