Twin Cities man, 2 others sentenced in double murder of Red Lake couple

A Twin Cities man and two others have been sentenced to prison for their roles in the New Year’s Day robbery and murder of a couple left to burn in their home on the Red Lake Indian Reservation.

David J. Martin, 46, of Columbia Heights, was sentenced Friday in federal court in St. Paul to 13 years and four months for robbery. Kevin J. Needham, 21, of Red Lake, was sentenced to 7 years and six months for robbery, and Terin R. Stately, 25, of Red Lake, was sentenced to three years and four months for aiding and abetting robbery.

In June 21, Geshik-O-Binese Martin, 30, of Red Lake, was sentenced to life in prison on two counts of murder in the first degree, two counts of murder in the second degree, and one count of robbery. The two Martins are cousins.

According to prosecutors:

On New Year’s Day 2011, Craig D. Roy and Darla A. Beaulieu were fatally stabbed while money and illegal drugs were stolen from Roy’s home. Their bodies were found in the remains of the house, which was destroyed by fire that same day.

In his plea agreement, Needham said he agreed to travel with Stately and the Martins to Roy’s residence, the intention being to take money and cocaine by force. Among other things, Needham admittedly stood in the drive during the robbery.

In her plea agreement, Stately admitted driving the group to and from the Roy residence and waiting in the vehicle during the robbery. She also admittedly knew of the plan to rob Roy.

Roy was born and raised in Red Lake. He moved in 1985 to Minneapolis, where he met Beaulieu. They returned to northern Minnesota and had three children and two grandchildren.
