AREA PREP ROUNDUP: Bagley seeks third win this week at Pilager

BAGLEY — Bagley’s football team bounced Cass Lake-Bena from the ranks of the unbeaten last week as the Flyers stormed to a 20-6 lead and widened the final margin to 26-6.

Last week’s victory upped Bagley’s overall and Northstar East Conference records to 2-1 while the Panthers dipped to 2-1.

Bagley will seek its third win Friday when it heads to Pillager (0-3). Cass Lake-Bena hosts Pine River (3-0).

“We looked very sharp offensively in our first two possessions,” said Bagley coach Brandon Schwegel.

Both marches resulted in touchdowns and setting the tone was fullback Lucas Olson who scored from seven yards out midway through the first quarter.

On their next drive the Flyers connected again, this time when quarterback Jordan Loiland teamed with tight end Jake Skansberg on a 10-yard pass with 2:31 to play in the opening stanza.

Bagley took the 13-0 lead into the second period but CL-B sliced its deficit in half with an interception return for a touchdown.

It didn’t take Bagley long, however, to answer Cass Lake-Bena’s score as Logan Thorson ran the ensuing kickoff 54 yards to set up Olson’s 4-yard TD run with 35 seconds to play in the half.

Cage booted the conversion and Bagley was on top 20-6 at intermission.

The home team iced the victory early in the third quarter as an 11-play drive that consumed more than five minutes culminated with a 7-yard run by Thorson.

After Thorson’s TD the Flyers concentrated on working the clock with their effective ground game.

Leading the running attack was Thorson who gained 88 yards on 14 carries. Olson gained 40 yards on 10 rushes and Nate Rolfson ran seven times for 36 yards.
