Weekend Severe Thunderstorms Cause Damage

Severe Thunderstorms developed on Saturday afternoon and left tree damage and isolated property damage in the Blackduck and Hines area. At 2:50pm the National Weather Service issued a severe thunderstorm watch, and shortly after 3pm a Special Weather Statement was issued for east central Beltrami County with large hail and winds being expected. At approximately 3:30pm, the Beltrami County 911 dispatch center started receiving several reports of downed trees and property damage in Blackduck. The storms rapidly developed as they moved into the Blackduck area, producing heavy rainfall, hail, lightning strikes, and strong winds.

Based on radar observations, storm reports, and damages, straight-line winds from the thunderstorms caused most of the damage. Damage around Blackduck included many trees being snapped, electrical lines downed, roadway signs being twisted, baseball dugout completely blown over, minor roof damages, and damage to outbuildings. The Blackduck Police Department and Beltrami County Sheriff’s Office assisted as county, city, township, and state crews worked to clear debris from the roadways. No injuries were reported as a result of this storm.

Chris Muller, Assistant Emergency Management Director, Beltrami County Sheriffs Office, reported to the scene and made note of the damage involved in order to report such to the State of Minnesota Homeland Security and Emergency Management office.
