Basketball stars Shoni and Jude Schimmel to visit Red Lake

Shoni and Jude Schimmel, who led the Louisville Cardinals to runners-up in the 2013 NCAA Women's Basketball Championship, will visit Red Lake on Sept. 21, officials announced today.

The sisters are from the Confederated Tribes of the Umatilla Indian Reservation in Oregon, and their consistent, exciting play, which they describe as "rez ball," won over many fans across the country last year.

The Cardinals made an impressive run in the tournament before losing to the University of Connecticut in the championship game.

Often ambassadors for Indian Country, the sisters are visiting reservations across the country and will spend an entire day meeting with youth at Red Lake on Sept. 21, a press release said.

"They're our inspiration," Shoni said in a press release. "You talk about us being an inspiration for other people, but we're inspired by that little girl out there. She's looking up to us and she wants to be us. I'm out there saying, 'Be better than us.'"

More information on the day's activities will be released at a later time, organizers said.

Shoni, a senior, and Jude, a junior, told The Associated Press that fellow American Indians sometimes travel hundreds of miles just to see them play.

"We know how much they drove,” Shoni Schimmel told the Associated Press. “We know how exciting it is for them, but it’s also an honor and a privilege for us.”

The Schimmel family was the subject of the documentary "Off the Rez," which documented the large family's decision to leave the reservation to pursue basketball success while still preserving Native American traditions.
