One injured in afternoon shooting

BEMIDJI -- A juvenile male said by police to be responsible for shooting a man near a home in Frohn Township on Tuesday was riding in a truck with the victim when police arrived on scene.

Devin Craig Spears-Thomas was shot more than once by the juvenile, according to police, and was taken to a hospital in Duluth to be treated for non life-threatening gunshot wounds. Beltrami County Sheriff Phil Hodapp said Spears-Thomas had been shot in an appendage. The ages of the juvenile suspect and Spears-Thomas were not immediately available.

Police were called just past noon Tuesday to a home on Swenson Road Northeast, just north of Roosevelt Road Northeast, about six miles east of Bemidji. According to Beltrami County’s mapping system, a home at 682 Swenson Road Southeast is owned by Spears-Thomas.

The shooting occurred after a domestic dispute between Spears-Thomas and his wife, Amy Spears-Thomas, according to a press release from the Beltrami County Sheriff’s Office.

Police learned a pickup truck was leaving the area of the home, and found Devin Spears-Thomas and the alleged shooter inside.

An area in front of a garage door of a metal barn near the home was littered with spent shell casings. Police marked the casings with crime scene placards, and were examining what appeared to be several bullet holes in the garage door.

The juvenile was arrested and is being held by police pending the results of their investigation. No other injuries were reported.
