One dead in motorcycle-car crash in Hubbard County

PARK RAPIDS — Police say a Bemidji woman fell asleep while intoxicated behind the wheel of her sport utility vehicle before she crossed the centerline and killed a passenger on a motorcycle.

Victoria Blakely Whitefeather, 23, was charged in Hubbard County District Court with several counts of criminal vehicular homicide for striking a motorcycle driven by Robert Childs, of Proctor.

Childs’ passenger, 51-year-old Tracy Childs, was airlifted to North Memorial Hospital in Robbinsdale, where she was pronounced dead as a result of injuries from the collision.

Robert Childs remains hospitalized in critical condition at an undisclosed medical facility, according to a criminal complaint filed by the Hubbard County Attorney’s Office.

Whitefeather was travelling south just before 10 a.m. Sunday on County Road 36, about a half mile south of County Road 9 when the collision occurred.

In Whitefeather’s vehicle, police found an open container of alcohol in the center console. Whitefeather admitted to police she had been drinking, consuming more than 10 shots and eight mixed drinks the night before, according to the complaint.

After being treated and released from a Bemidji-area hospital, Whitefeather was booked into the Hubbard County Jail. There, she performed a breathalyzer test about 3 p.m. that showed her blood alcohol concentration to be .08, the legal threshold for DWI. Whitefeather also gave a statement to police in which she admitted falling asleep at the wheel. - See more at: http://www.bemidjipioneer.com/content/one-dead-motorcycle-car-crash-hubbard-county#sthash.DY4i4zp8.dpuf
