On Wednesday, August 21, 2013, at 1:08 PM a Beltrami County Sheriff’s Deputy on routine patrol attempted to stop a vehicle that was driving extremely recklessly on Bemidji Ave N at 29th St NW near the north end of the City of Bemidji. The single occupant, driving what ultimately was a stolen 1999 white Olds Alero with Minnesota license plates, then increased his speed and took measures to evade the officer. A pursuit, during which time the driver endangered other motorists by forcing them off the road and driving at speeds which escalated as he drove up to 100 mph, ensued north and onto Irvine Ave, ending near Ponemah, located on the Red Lake Reservation approximately 55 miles north of Bemidji. At that time the Beltrami County Sheriff’s Office and Red Lake Tribal Police mutually agreed to terminate the pursuit due to the increasingly dangerous driving behavior of the suspect. Officers were able to make a positive identification of the driver. The suspect eventually abandoned the vehicle but was not located. The vehicle was recovered.

At this time, Edwin Lee Johnson, age 41 of Bemidji, is being sought, pending review by the Beltrami County Attorney’s Office, for charges including driving after cancellation-inimical to public safety driving status, fleeing a peace officer and unauthorized use of a motor vehicle. Johnson is described as a Native American male, with closely shaven hair, 5’7”, 200 lbs wearing a dark colored T shirt.

Anyone with information on Johnson’s whereabouts is urged to contact the Beltrami County Sheriff’s Office at 218-333-9111.
