Cass Lake man sentenced for possessing stolen pistol

BEMIDJI -- A Cass Lake man with an extensive decade-long criminal history was sentenced Tuesday for being in possession of a stolen handgun.

Joseph Allen Jones, 30, must serve two years and four months at the St. Cloud Correctional Facility, with credit for 146 days served. Beltrami District Judge Paul Benshoof sentenced Jones.

A report of a stolen pistol to the Hubbard County Sheriff's Office on March 10 eventually led investigators to a home of a relative of Jones. There, Jones admitted to police the weapon was inside the home.

Jones has a criminal history that includes two felony assault convictions in Cass County in 2003 and 2005, as well as a felony assault conviction in Crow Wing County in 2004, according to court documents. In Beltrami County, Jones was convicted of domestic assault in 2010 and failing to register as a predatory offender in 2011, court documents showed.
