BEMIDJI, Minn. — Berry pickers heading to the Beltrami Island State Forest this summer may find new signs that show their favorite picking spots are off limits.

Minnesota Public Radio reports (http://bit.ly/13ylC5P ) the forest between Bemidji and Warroad is popular with berry pickers and hunters. But many parcels of land are owned by the Red Lake Band of Ojibwe, which has put up new no-trespassing signs.

Red Lake Forestry Program director Jeff Fossen says the Red Lake Nation has long owned the land and posted it, but it's challenging to keep signs up.

Fossen says non-tribal members may have been using the land without knowing it's off-limits.

The Department of Natural Resources says it's been getting a lot of calls from people confused about the new signs. They're asking visitors to respect them.
