Fatal ATV accident and updates on arrests from the weekend- Beltrami County

 

The Beltrami County Sheriff’s office received a 911 call at 9:58 AM on Monday, July 22, 2013 from a motorist who witnessed an ATV accident in progress. The accident

occurred on the Scenic Highway NE (Co Rd 39) just north of Birchmont Beach Rd NE approximately 22 miles east of Bemidji in Moose Lake Township, Beltrami County. A

female, age 36 from Grand Rapids, MN, was riding the machine which rolled and ended up pinning her to the ground. Beltrami County deputies, Leech Lake Ambulance, Leech Lake Tribal officers,

Sanford AirMED and First Responders were dispatched to the scene. Lifesaving efforts ensued but were not successful. The female was pronounced dead at the scene from major injuries incurred in the crash. The victim’s name is being withheld until all family members are notified. Additional assistance was also provided from the Minnesota State Patrol.

UPDATE ON JAMES SCHUMMER

Friday morning, July 19, 2013, Schummer refused to stop for a Deputy who was following up on a reckless ATV complaint in the Wilton area complaint he ultimately crashed the ATV and fled on foot. The Beltrami County Sheriff’s office Investigators, Deputies and Task Force members worked diligently developing and following leads and interviewing known associates in order to develop information on where Schummer might be located. Schummer had been out of prison and on the run from the Department of Corrections for a parole violation. Schummer is also a person of interest in a number of thefts and burglaries. Approximately a dozen officers, including the BCA, FBI, Paul Bunyan Task Force, Headwaters Safe Trails Task Force, Leech Lake Tribal Police, Hubbard County Sheriff’s Office, Minnesota State Patrol (helicopter), DNR conservation officers and Bemidji Police Department assisted with the search.

By Friday evening information had been gathered which pinpointed Schummer’s location. Several officers, with two search warrants in hand, convened on a residence in Eckles Township, the 6000 block of Mac Ct NW, approximately 7 miles northwest of Bemidji, where Schummer was arrested without incident. Schummer is currently in jail in custody for felonies including the parole violation for possess pistol/assault weapon; fleeing a peace officer in a motor vehicle; theft motor vehicle and fleeing a peace officer by means other than a motor vehicle. Two of his associates, John Joseph Waslaski, age 39, and Holly Marie Waslaski, age 37, were also arrested and taken into custody on charges of a felony-aid an offender. Further charges against these three are under consideration by the Beltrami County Attorney’s Office after a third search warrant discovered thousands of dollars of stolen property at the residence, much of which was stolen from job sites and garages over a period of time. Investigators will be contacting victims regarding property that was recovered so that they can come to our office and identify their property.

UPDATE ON CodeRED INCIDENT Saturday July 20 2013

On Saturday, July 20, 2013 at approximately 6:00 PM, an incident occurred in the 3200 block of Dirk Ln NW SW, in Bemidji Township, off of Adams Ave NW (Co Rd 11), just west of the Hwy 2 Bypass, necessitating a CodeRED, due to the nature of the complaint, to be sent to the residents in the neighborhoods surrounding Dirk Ln SW. The complainant alleged that 3 suspects, dressed in masks, possibly armed with a handgun, looking for her husband, were in the area threatening harm to her family. Upon arrival, officers did hear crashing through the woods in a northeasterly direction. A search ensued but no suspects were located. Two vehicles parked in the area were checked and found to have nothing to do with this case. This report later proved to be false after an additional interview was conducted on Sunday in an unrelated matter with the complainant.
