People from the community got to experience live art demonstrations, food and music Friday and Saturday during the Indigenous Arts Festival at the Rail River Folk School. Joe Froemming | Bemidji Pioneer
BEMIDJI — It was sun, smiles, culture, music, art and demonstrations Saturday at the Rail River Folk School.
They hosted the Indigenous Arts Festival, an event funded by Region 2 Arts Council, the Bemidji Area Indian Center, Clean Water Land and Legacy Amendment and others. This is the first year it has been put together, but organizers said they hope it will become an annual event.
The event, which began Friday evening, provided the community with live music, art workshops and performances.
Friday was the "One Earth" concert that featured live performances by Sonny Johnson, Lumhe "Micco" Sampson and Windy Downwind.
Saturday was the arts festival, which provided artists demonstrations, a Powwow demonstration and a closing ceremony.
Some of the demonstrations included hide tanning, canoe making, quilting, Birchbark crafting and many others.
Guests were able to write or videotape what they thought about the event on sight as well.
