First Nations Development Institute and Native America Calling Team Up to Provide Radio Programs with a Financial Focus

LONGMONT, Colorado (June 20, 2013) – Ever wonder if a car dealership is taking advantage of you? Or have some questions about how to use credit wisely? If you tune in to the national radio program Native America Calling every Friday for the next month you may get some answers. First Nations Development Institute is partnering with Native America Calling to offer a series of five radio programs on financial topics.

The five-part series, which first aired last Friday June 14, will broadcast every Friday at 1:00 p.m. Eastern Time for the next four weeks, with a final broadcast on July 12. Last week, host Tara Gatewood and expert guests discussed common selling and lending practices by automobile dealers in and around Native communities. Calvin Lee, an attorney with Navajo Nation Human Rights Commission, shared information about problems people have had with unethical car dealers near the Navajo Nation. The June 21 broadcast will feature a conversation about minor’s trust payments, and feature a discussion of how young people can successfully prepare for receiving these large payments, or their “Big Money.” On Friday June 28, the radio program will offer participants a chance to ask questions about how to get the best deal when taking out a loan.

Each weekly broadcast concludes with a brief conversation with the financial expert known as Dr. Per Cap, “the financial warrior.” Dr. Per Cap originated as an advice column sponsored by First Nations Development Institute that was designed to assist individuals and families to become financially independent. On each radio program, producer Monica Braine consults Dr. Per Cap for advice on a financial topic and he shares his insights, advice and wisdom.

Native America Calling, produced by the Koahnic Broadcast Corporation (a Native-operated media center in Anchorage, Alaska) is a live call-in program linking public radio stations, the Internet and listeners together in a thought-provoking national conversation about issues specific to Native communities. Native America Calling is heard on more than 52 stations in the United States and in Canada by approximately 500,000 listeners each week.

This Friday’s one-hour broadcast and all future broadcasts will air at 1:00 p.m. Eastern Time and can be accessed by following this link: http://www.nativeamericacalling.com/nac_main.shtml.
