Frederick William Jones Sr.

Frederick William Jones Sr., 81. “Gijiwaminaan “Our Friend” a member of the Bear Clan entered the spirit world on Saturday, June 8, 2013.

He was born September 3, 1931 to William Jones and Mary Downwind.

Fred was raised and educated in Ponemah where he met and married Julia Goose on April 10, 1954.

Fred joined the U.S. Army in 1948, he was a Paratrooper in the Korean War 82nd Airborne and was Honorably Discharged on May 14th, 1952 after serving four years.

Fred was a very hard worker throughout his life working as a logger at the Redby Sawmill, a janitor/bus driver for Red Lake Schools, employed also with Red Lake Builders and Red Lake Housing Authority.

He was very well liked and the kindest person anyone could have known. He worked hard to raise his family and was also a good role model for his children. He loved all of his grandchildren and didn’t treat any one different than the other. He was always working on cars and taught his sons how to fix cars.

Fred lived his last ten years at the Jourdain Perpich Extended Care Facility where he built a good rapport with all the nursing assistants and staff. He always had a smile on his face.

Survived by his children: Fred (Roberta) Jones Jr, Myron (Pearl) Jones Sr, Terry Jones, Ronald Jones, Edwin Jones, Jessie Jones, Vickie Jones, Sharon (Kevin) Jones; thirty three grandchildren and fifty three great grandchildren; a special grandson: Aaron (Michelle) Jones who he raised as his own son; a brother: Melvin Jones; many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, brothers: William Jones II and Hinton Jones, sisters: Louisa Rodrigues, Geraldine Yellow, and MaryJane Whitefeather, a daughter: Darlene Jones, sons: Cornelius Jones and Byron Jones, grandchildren: Greg Johnson Jr., Alden Jones, Arlan Greenleaf, Forrest Jones, Dalton Jones, Tasheila Jones, Tristan White, Avery Stately and Trevion Jones.

Funeral services for Frederick Jones Sr. will be held on Thursday, June 13th at 10:00 A.M. at The Boys & Girls Club in Ponemah. Spiritual Advisor will be Steve Jackson.

Traditional Drum Group will be “Young Kingbird”.

Interment will follow at The Family Burial Grounds in Ponemah where he will be laid to rest next to his wife, Julia.

All night wakes will be held on Tuesday, June 11th and Wednesday, June 12th beginning at 10:00 A.M. at The Boys & Girls Club in Ponemah.

Honorary Casket Bearers will be All Nursing Home Staff of Jourdain Perpich Extended Care.

Casket Bearers will be Wesley Jones, Clarence Spears Jr., Dwight Greenleaf, Christopher Cloud, Juan Rodriguez, Torey Jones. Alternates: Nicholas Jones, Grant Greenleaf and Michael Johnson.
