Area schools score well on American Indian performance

BEMIDJI — Multiple Bemidji area schools have been listed as top-performing schools in Minnesota for low-income and American Indian performance, according to statewide nonprofit agency.

In Bemidji, Central Elementary School (fourth in elementary Indian student performance), Bemidji Middle School (third in Indian student performance), TrekNorth junior high (fourth in middle school Indian student performance) and Bemidji Senior Lumberjack Area Learning Center (fourth in high school Indian student performance), were recognized as being top 10 schools by the Minnesota Campaign for Achievement Now.

Dan McKeon, TrekNorth executive director, said small class sizes and the support provided by staff contributed to the high ranking.

“Our teachers work together, and they know what the students need as they move up grade levels,” McKeon said. “We’ve taken the time to understand their skill levels and tailored education to their skill levels.”

Receiving high marks in a several criteria, the four schools are being recognized among nearly 2,000 schools statewide.
