Warriors Don't Quit: 7th Annual Youth Leadership Conference held in Red Lake

Day One of the 2-day Red Lake's Seventh Annual Youth Leadership Conference began on Wednesday, May 1, 2013 at the Red Lake High School in Red Lake.

Dedicated in "Memory of Eddie Wadda," a teacher, motivator and frequent presenter of the conference in the past, this years theme was "Warriors Don't Quit."

Wadda (Eastern Shoshone), 42, of Fort Washakie, Wyoming died last May in a motor vehicle accident near Buffalo, Wyoming.

Registration began at 8 AM, followed by the Grand Entry featuring Red Lake Royalty, Native Pride Dancers and the music by the drum group Young Kingbird Singers.

Following the Opening Prayer, Conference Facilitator Chance Rush talked about Wadda, along with family and friends who had made the trip to the conference from Wyoming, and then honor songs and a moment of silence.

Chairman Floyd "Buck"Jourdain presented the welcome address and also spoke very highly of Wadda, followed by introductions by the Red Lake Youth Council and a slide presentation.

Two sessions of workshops took place in the afternoon, featuring "Hypnosis and the Power of the Mind" prresented by Robert Johnston; "A Mother's Path to Healing" by Tanya Jourdain; Living a Positive Lifestyle" by Mylo Smith; "Knowing the Signs of Suicide" by Tamarah Gehlen; "The Seven Teachings, Understanding Midewewin Values by Richard Morrison; "Teen Pregnancy" by Billie Schoenborn and Sarah Lussier; "Love Shouldn't Hurt" by Tamarah Gehlen; and "Elements of Life for Growth and Balance" by Chance Rush, Emcee-one and Chief Swagg.

Youth Basketball Tournaments were scheduled for later that afternoon, and the "Native Pride Dancer" Performance at the Red Lake Humanities Center.

Thursday's activities include the Morning Prayer and updates, and in addition to some of the workshops presented on Wednesday, more featuring "Red Lake Scholarship Program" by Rob Beaulieu and Mavis LaDuke; Youth Entrepreneur" by Sharon James; "When it's not just Partying Anymore" by Tamarah Gehlen; and "Cycle of Violence, Sexual, Domestic Abuse" by Shari Smith, Rose Barrett and Vicky Fineday.

Chaske Spenser, Sam from the Twilight Series movies, is scheduled to give a motivational speech from 2:00 to 3:15 on Thursday and key-note the Youth Conference Banquet at 5 p.m. Last year Adam Beach was featured.

The Youth Conference Banquet will take place at the Red Lake Casino Events Center.
