Third Annual Elder's Gathering Held in Red Lake - P6

Red Lake kicked off the first day of the Third Annual Elder's Gathering at the Seven Clans Casino Events Center on Monday, April 1, 2013, with registration, breakfast, opening ceremonies and welcome remarks from facilitators Cheri Goodwin and Delwyn Holthusen.

About 200 people were in attendance throughout the morning program, which also featured a keynote address from Stacy Thunder.

Informational booths from tribal programs and other services were set up in the lobby, of which included free IDs for elders from the Red Lake Tribal Enrollment Department, information from the Red Lake Department of Public Safety, the Red Lake DNR on Radon, the Red Lake Treasurer and Secretary, a health station from Red Lake Comprehensive Heath and much more.

Presentations and entertainment took place throughout the day, featuring Balancing Our Lifestyles Program, Healthy Lifestyles from Comprehensive Health, a slide show presentation by Georgia Downwind, the shapey/shaky legs contest and performers Native Pride Arts.

Evening activities included appearances by some of the Red Lake Basketball Players and their video of the historic game between Red Lake and Wabosso, with a black jack and cribbage tournament capping out the day.

Tuesday's activities include the opening Ceremony by Eugene Stillday, keynote speaker Holly Cook-Macarro, a skit by Anna Gibbs, the King and Queen selection and a talent/variety show.

Day two will finish up at 1 PM.

5:30 – 6:30 – Supper-Special Guests Red Lake Basketball Players 1997-1998 Video Red Lake vs. Wabasso

• This section celebrates Red Lake's position in local hoops lore when they led the record breaking Red Lake Ogichidaag basketball team that went to the State Championship in St. Paul for the 1997 Class A semifinal. They played the Wabasso Rabbits (remarkably from Ojibwemowin Waabooz/Rabbit) in what was to become the biggest record breaking game in state basketball history. Records broken included Field goals attempted 87, field goals made 48, most points in a quarter 43, most points scored by a losing team 113, total points 230, and more.
