Shakopee Mdewakanton Announces Mobile Unit Spring Schedule

Prior Lake, Minn. – The Shakopee Mdewakanton Sioux Community (SMSC) has announced its spring plans to help local organizations and Minnesota tribal communities through its mobile medical clinic, the SMSC Mobile Unit. The SMSC Mobile Unit provides health screenings, mammograms, vision and dental services, and other prevention and education services.

2012 accomplishments

The SMSC Mobile Unit had 97 deployments in fiscal year 2012, including 22 for the Scott County Public Health Department as part of an ongoing collaboration; 24 to American Indian health clinics; 24 for SMSC tribal members, employees, and Scott County Native Americans; seven to the Shakopee Women’s Prison; 13 for other health screening events; and seven incident command deployments. Also last year, 872 mammograms were performed aboard the Mobile Unit, bringing the total to 4,422 mammograms since operations began in 2007. Services were also provided to 478 dental patients, 164 vision patients, 65 diabetes patients, and 153 people who had their cholesterol tested.

How to request the SMSC Mobile Unit

The SMSC Mobile Unit is a combined project of the SMSC Health Department and Mdewakanton Emergency Services. In addition to its service as a mobile health clinic, the vehicle also provides medical support during events and serves as a mobile incident command center in emergency situations such as search and rescue operations and lost children searches.

About the Shakopee Mdewakanton Sioux Community

The Shakopee Mdewakanton Sioux Community, a federally recognized Indian Tribe in Minnesota, is the owner and operator of Mystic Lake Casino Hotel, Little Six Casino, Mazopiya, The Meadows at Mystic Lake, and other enterprises on a reservation south of the Twin Cities. The SMSC utilizes its financial resources from gaming and non-gaming enterprises to pay for the internal infrastructure of the Tribe, including but not limited to roads, water and sewer systems, emergency services, and essential services to its members in education, health, and well-being.

A tribal charitable giving program which comes from a cultural and social tradition to assist those in need has given away more than $258.2 million to Indian Tribes, charitable organizations, and schools since 1996. Through the Mdewakanton LIFE Program, the SMSC has donated 776 Automated External Defibrillators to tribes, schools, police and fire departments, and other organizations with 21 lives saved due to their use.

The SMSC has also made more than $523 million in loans mostly to other tribes for economic and infrastructure development projects. Since 1996 the SMSC paid more than $7.6 million for shared local road construction and an additional $16.7 million for road projects on the reservation. The SMSC has also paid $14.4 million to local governments for services and another $6.4 million for other projects. Total construction spending by the SMSC since 1990 is more than $758.7 million.
