Section 8A Championship – Fosston 49 vs. Win-E-Mac 54

After defeating the Fosston Greyhounds twice during the regular season, the Win-E-Mac Patriots came into Fridays Section 8A Championship game as the favorite.

The Fosston Greyhounds gave Win-E-Mac a huge scare, but the Patriots were able to hang for dear life to pull out the five point win and qualify for the State Tournament for the first time in 24 years.

Freshman Madison McKeever hit some clutch free throws late in the game to help lead the Patriots to the victory over the pesky Greyhounds. Fosston held a 45-44 lead with 1:40 left to go, but that would be the last lead that Fosston would have for the night.

McKeever ended up with 23 points for Win-E-Mac. Shelby Kaster pitched in with 19 points and 9 rebounds for the Patriots. Korbyn Ross scored 8 and 8th Grader Alayna Espeseth was a perfect 4-4 at the free throww line for her 4 points on the night. In a game that featured two freshman as their teams leading scorers,

Abby Swanson led Fosston with 11 points, with all 11 of those points coming in the second half. Lauren Wilson closed out her career with 10 points, with Rebecca Sistad hitting three 3 point shots for her nine points. Kami Viken also scored nine for Fosston as they close out their season with a record of 16-12.

The Patriots, who beat Fosston 73-48 and 59-44 during the regular season, will take a record of 26-2 into their State Tournament game against Mankato Loyola at 5:00 PM Thursday at Williams Arena in Minneapolis. All Win-E-Mac games in the State Tournament can be heard on 96.7 FM.

It's the first trip to state for Win-E-Mac since 1989, which is the only year the Patriots have qualified for state.
