Susan Edith King

Susan Edith King, 70, of Ponemah, MN, whose Indian name was Zhaagatewabik, which means “Sunshine Shining on Her”, died on Tuesday, March 5, 2013 at the Red Lake PHS Hospital at Red Lake, MN.

Traditional Indian Services will be held at the Ponemah Community Center in Ponemah on Saturday, March 9, 2013 at 10 AM. A wake will begin at 2 PM on Thursday, March 7th at the Ponemah Community Center and will continue until the time of the funeral. Burial will be at the Family Burial Grounds in Ponemah. Cease Family Funeral Home of Blackduck assisted the family with arrangements.

She was born on September 13, 1942 in Ponemah MN, the daughter of Johnson and Faye Kingbird. She was raised and attended school in Ponemah. She lived in Minneapolis, MN in her early years, and married Albert King when she was 16 yrs. old. She worked various jobs in Minneapolis, including being a manager for the Drake Motel, and Bozo the Clown Show. She also put service in for Minneapolis and Redby Group Homes. She moved back to Ponemah when she was 41 and then worked as a cook for the Ponemah Elderly Nutrition Program (ENP) for 20 plus years until her retirement in 2009.

She loved to go to the casino, cook, watch westerns, play cards and her favorite board game “Sorry”. She enjoyed riding around, and most of all spending time with her family.

She is survived by 5 daughters, Roselyn King of Ponemah, Faye King of Warroad, MN, Thelma King of Ponemah, Lorraine (Brian) Olson of Warroad, and Theresa (Ernesto) King of Minneapolis; her son, Ronald King, Sr. of White Earth, MN; grandchildren she raised, Shelda, Warren, Daniel, Susan, Jamie, and Nina King; special adopted daughters, Tina Johnson and Eva Kingbird; 3 sisters, Martha Smith and Pauline Hamlin, both of Redby, and Ruth Lyons; 7 brothers, Royce (Stephanie) Kingbird of Bemidji, MN, Vernon Kingbird of Redby, Mark Kingbird, Sr. of Bemidji, James Kingbird, Albert Kingbird, Oliver “Corky” Clark, and Dana Lyons, all of Redby; 21 grandchildren; 24 great grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her daughter, Alberta King; an infant daughter; her grandson, Royal King; her infant grandson, Brandon Olson; 2 sisters, Mary Kingbird and Arrtie Lyons; and her uncle, Vernon Hawk.
